[movies]The Real Garden June 11, 2013 - therealgarden@yahoo.com
Did you know the first day of summer is also "Cuckoo Warning Day"? Well, here's my warning: you better get all that warm weather stuff in the ground before Cuckoo Warning Day.  The peppers are in the ground and enjoying the great weather we've been having, and it's time to get the corn and squash transplanted, so that's what we do. The Hepicot peas are resplendent in bloom with hues of fuchsia, magenta and indigo...

[movies]The Real Garden-January 17, 2012 - Jason Morehead
The weather is clear and the days are just a little longer, so we step outside and harvest a nice Italian savoy cabbage. Once the harvest is done, it's time to take a look at the soil and see what it needs for next season.  Then we find a place to plant a new garlic variety that arrived on my doorstep right after I had finished planting all my garlic. Lucky you, you get to see what the original cloves have been doing for the last two months...

[movies]The Real Garden-August 21, 2012 - therealgarden@yahoo.com

As we enter the height of summer, the garden is really popping. Corn, tomatoes, squash, tomatillos are all topping their cages. But what's this? Empty beds? Time to start "winter gardening", i.e. plant stuff in the summer that will survive into the winter. We plant some carrots in this spirit. The new cucumber spacing looks like it is paying off with nice healthy vines that aren't (too) crowded. More information about this show available at: Seattle Community Media

Argh! It's August! The garden is going full bore, watering and trellising are the pastimes now. The carrots planted on the last show are up, now it's time get the beets in. The first ripe tomato clocks in at 95 days from transplant, and it is right next to the red spectrum reflector: dang, could this actually be working? I have a lot of open beds ready to go, what to do? Let's plant some Witloof chicory (i.e. "Belgian Endive"). Hmmm, couldn't  we fit some "Agretti" (Salsola soda) in between the rows? Why not! Then it's down to the lab to show off the results of the tomato grafting project. That new incubator kicks butt: seven days from cut to unclipped. It's still pretty gloomy out in the garden, not much will be planted until February when the peas go in. So it's back down to the lab where we discuss pre-germination for artichoke seeds. Then it's into the tropic zone with a look at stevia, tamarind, and cocona. As always, we put chickens on TV. More information about this show available at: Seattle Community Media

Brand new stinking show! Why stinking? Because C.K. is out of town, so you get my tripod and up the nose shots! Yeah, Public TV! Anyway, I try to redeem myself with a basic discussion on building beds, adding carbon to the Alderwood series soil, and a little ramble about Cation Exchange Capacity, which I'll probably have to explain in fuller detail. Enjoy my crappy camera work! More information about this show available at: Seattle Community Media

Could it really be the end of May already? Holy Cow, better get moving! We have to get some peppers and tomatillos in; I'm ready, the beds are ready, the plants are ready, but the old "June-uary" routine is threatening to put a cold wet blanket on the plans. Break out the plastic and the hoop house and batten them down. We head down to the lab and start some corn and squash indoors where they can get a jump on the season...

Let's plant some lettuce! We take a look at my neglected greens bed. A quick soil prep and it's time to plant. Demonstration of a couple approaches for early lettuce. A pocket full of last year's seed will make a nice variety in the salad bowl. Watch as the host gets completely flustered over the very loose definition of "spinach" on the seed packets! Hilarious! A brand new show! The new chicks are about ten weeks old, out in the yard, and beginning to integrate with the ancient crones (integration being a nice word for getting pecked on the head occasionally). They still have separate bedrooms, but soon everyone will be one big happy flock. We get down to business potting up some tomato and peppers, which includes taking a look at the grafted tomato varieties that came in the mail...

A cold front moves in for the spring equinox; the peas hang tough but they are growing slowly. Some spring greens are sprouting all on their own (sorrel, chicory, corn salad, salsify). It's too rainy for my demonstration of raking out a raw bed, so we head to the lab for some bench work. The tomato graftees are moving too slow, so we discuss ways to speed them up. There's some nice volunteer lettuce, red mustard, and miner's lettuce coming up between the witloof chicory - get it out and eat it, because everything's getting crowded. We start seeing some pea pods, that will be good in the salad. Warm weather crops are clicking along; they are under plastic some days, and open for the sun on the warmer days - check out that "squash yurt" design.  Watch out for cabbage loopers, they are showing up on the brassicas.  More information about this show availabl...

It's been so boring watching the plants grow vigorously, fruit abundantly and ripen on time. What fun is that? It certainly isn't instructional. So thank goodness, the cucumbers in bed #5 are getting nuked by something, and we are talking sudden death syndrome. Everything looked great one day, then Ka-ploowee! I've got three dead vines.
